Tjay Clarke departs for Toshiba

Outside back Tjay Clarke is set to embark on the next chapter of his rugby career, with Wellington Rugby confirming his move from the Wellington Lions to Japanese club Toshiba Brave Lupus Tokyo.

Clarke, 22, made his Lions debut in 2023 and quickly established himself as a dynamic attacking threat. Known for his speed, footwork and powerful left boot, Clarke has been a key contributor over the past two seasons, helping the Lions to the 2024 Bunnings NPC title.

Born in the Chatham Islands and raised across New Zealand and Australia, Clarke spent time in Perth and Sydney where he played rugby league at Endeavour Sports High School – before returning to New Zealand to attend St Patrick’s College Silverstream and later joining the Petone Rugby Club.

His standout performances at club level earned him selection for the Wellington Lions, where he went on to play 25 matches, scoring eleven tries, five conversions and a penalty for a total of 68 points.

WRFU CEO Tony Giles said “Tjay’s growth over the past two years has been tremendous. He’s an exciting, fearless player who’s made a real impact on and off the field. While we’re sad to see him go, we’re immensely proud to see him take this next step in his career and know he’ll thrive in Japan.”

Reflecting on his time in Wellington, Clarke said “I would like to thank the Wellington Lions for giving me the opportunity to start my rugby journey — the coaches, the boys and the fans. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time playing for this club. Wellington will always be home.”

Wellington Rugby wishes Tjay all the very best for his move abroad and thanks him for his contribution to the province.
