Higgins Set for Offshore Move
Edinburgh Rugby has secured Higgins on a three-year deal following the conclusion of the 2026 NPC season. Eligible to represent Scotland national team through his Scottish ancestry, Higgins follows a growing family link to the club, with brother Kienan Higgins having signed a short-term deal with Edinburgh in January.
The 23-year-old Petone Rugby Club representative has made 31 appearances for the Lions since his debut against Bay of Plenty in 2022, scoring 14 tries, including two on debut.
Despite missing the 2025 NPC season with a broken leg, Higgins has enjoyed significant success with the Lions, winning two NPC titles and lifting the Ranfurly Shield during his time with Wellington since 2022.
Higgins has also donned the silver fern, representing New Zealand Secondary Schools, New Zealand U20, and the All Blacks XV in 2024.
Higgins say’s “I can’t thank Wellington enough, playing for the Lions has been some of my most enjoyable footy. 2 championships and defending the Ranfurly Shield was a testament to how great of a club Wellington is. Thanks for all the support from the fans over the years”
Wellington CEO Tony Giles say’s “Riley has been an outstanding contributor to the Wellington Lions both on and off the field. His development through our system, impact in key matches, and commitment to the jersey have been first class. We’re incredibly proud of what he’s achieved in Wellington and wish him and his family all the very best for this next chapter in his rugby career.”
The Wellington Rugby community thanks Riley for his outstanding contribution to the Lions and wishes him every success in this exciting next adventure abroad.
