Family-friendly kick-off announced for 2020 Mitre 10 Cup games

Wellington Rugby is welcoming the new 7:05pm kick-off time for Mitre 10 Cup matches in 2020.

This season will mark 140 years of provincial pride, with the Lions playing their first game in Waikato on Friday, August 7.

Wellington Rugby CEO, Matt Evans, says the change will be perfect for families with rugby-mad children.

“Hopefully, that half an hour difference will mean we see more of our young fans at the games, supporting their team.”

The Lions just missed out on the cup last year after a tough loss to the Tasman Makos in the final.

This year, with a new coaching line-up, the team will once again be hoping for a chance at the title.

Head coach, Leo Crowley, says the announcement of the Mitre 10 Cup is exciting.

“I know Dion, Tamati, Greg and myself are looking forward to the season ahead. With the draw being confirmed it highlights the fact that our season is approaching fast. We understand the challenges of performing to a high standard in the Premiership.

“With Club rugby about to start players will have the platform to perform and put their hand up to be part of the Lions squad in 2020. It’s an exciting season ahead for us all.”

The Wellington Lions will play their first home game against Bay of Plenty on Friday, August 21.
